Introduction

A fridge is an important kitchen appliance. It enables people keep their perishable food items fresh for longer. This also means that you will be visiting the grocer less often and thus, you get to save time. However, a fridge works through the combined operation of different components. These components include;

Parts of small fridge

A fridge may look complex just by looking at it. In real sense, it actually easy to understand as compared to your microwave. The following are the main working components of a regular fridge that have not undergone major changes since the invention of refrigerators.

Fridge compressor

The compressor is located outside and under the fridge. It is the center of the refrigeration cycle. It purpose is to compress the refrigerant gases to raise the refrigerant’s pressure and current temperature as it moves to the heat conversation pipes. It functions as a pump that controls the circulation of the refrigerant. It also draws vapor from the evaporator so as to maintain low temperature and pressure.

Refrigerant

This is an essential part of small fridge. It starts as gas then changes to liquid before changing into gas again. Toxic gases like ammonia were used until the 1930’s when people started using Freon. Freon was used until scientists discovered that its use was causing negative effects on the ozone layer. This resulted to the use of HFC-134a compound.

Outer heat exchange pipes

This are curved and coiled pipes that are located at the back of a fridge. Their duty is to release the created heat through pressurizing the refrigerant.

Inner heat change pipes

As the gas or liquid is evaporated, it becomes cooler and travels through the inner heat interchange pipes in to the fridge. The main purpose of inner heat pipes is to allow the fridge to absorb the heat within the fridge and make it cold.

Condenser

A condenser is located at the back of a fridge. It is characterized by big slithering copper coils. The hot vapors from the fridge enter the condenser for cooling by the present atmospheric air. The refrigerant will liquefy at this point.

Evaporator

An evaporator is made of aluminum and copper tubing. The evaporator offers a platform for the remaining liquid refrigerant to absorb heat until it evaporates into vapor. The vapor is sucked out of the evaporator by the compressor and the refrigeration cycles starts.

Expansion valve

It is also known as the capillary tube. It is set of thin copper tubes that are similar to the condenser. The refrigerant passes through the expansion valve as the pressure and temperature reduce. This reduction in pressure causes the evaporation of almost half of the liquid refrigerant. This allows it to absorb heat and decrease the inner temperature of a fridge.

A fridge has two storage compartments. One compartment is used to store frozen items while the other stores regular items that do not requires freezing. These compartments are surrounded by the above-described parts for effective working of the refrigerator.
